Data Engineer - Bot Protection

Permanent employee, Full or part-time · Remote, Woerthsee

Who we are
Friendly Captcha offers bot protection which is privacy-friendly and does not require the user to perform tasks such as clicking images of cars, making it accessible to all humans.

Bootstrapped

Founded in 2020, Friendly Captcha is a fully bootstrapped, profitable, growing business. We are a mission-driven business first, and a startup second. We don't have the distracting goal of pleasing investors.

Vision

A safe internet accessible for all humans.

Human-first

We aim for sustainability, with a healthy work-life balance. We design our company to be around in 5 years.
What we offer
What we offer
  • A place in a bootstrapped, mission-driven business. We get to design the business how we want it to be.
  • A high-impact product that protects our customers’ internet presence, which is making the internet more human friendly. Together we have an impact we can be proud of.
  • A small and effective team that is making a big difference by being focused. We prefer a small team that is great over a big team that is good.
  • A place to grow personally and professionally.
  • A testing ground to try and change things — we like to move fast and value iteration.
  • A remote job where you can work either 4 or 5 days per week.
Your profile
At Friendly Captcha we’re looking for an engineer whose focus will be on using data to improve our bot detection and protection. Telling apart bots from genuine users is vital to our product.

Our engineering team is remote across Europe. You can work remotely from anywhere, or you can work from our office near Munich (some days of the week). You must be domiciled in the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland.

What we expect you to bring:

* Familiarity with multiple programming languages. We are a Go shop mostly, you should be happy to learn that along the way. We understand data exploration often happens in Python (with the scientific Python stack: scipy, numpy, pandas and friends).
* Experience visualizing large amounts of data with tools and libraries such as Matplotlib, Seaborn, Mode or Redash.
* Experience in performing exploratory data analysis, diving into the data to find patterns. Relevant tools may be Jupyter and Marimo.
* The ability to translate your findings into actionable rules and models that can be applied in production.
* A preference for keeping things simple if possible. We strongly prefer things that can be explained rather than complicated-but-powerful deep neural networks.
* You're familiar with the Linux command-line, and have worked with version control (Git) before.

Our stack
We see engineering as a way to build a great product, not as a goal in itself.

Some key technologies in our stack are Go, Typescript, Postgres, Clickhouse, Redis, Terraform, and OpenTelemetry.

For the data science part, we expect you will be familiar with visualization tools such as Matplotlib, Seaborn, Mode or Redash, as well as literate programming environments such as Jupyter or Marimo.

Unique for our company, we support an entirely EU-owned stack (so no AWS here). This is a
big selling point for governments and EU companies.

Freedom and Trust
We aim for sustainability, with a healthy work-life balance. We believe that creative and
talented individuals are self-organizing — you get the freedom to shape your work and time how
you work best.

Opportunity
Roles grow and evolve, especially in young companies. We look for those who enjoy learning
new things and are not afraid to take ownership as they grow with the company.
